Peter was the second child of Johannes Peterson and Maria Jacobsdotter in the Kallang Cottage, Village of Hallabo, Hultsjo Parish Area, County of Jonkoping, Sweden. Peter really had two families; one in Sweden with his first wife, Maja Jonasdotter (married on June 24, 1835), and the other in the United States with his second wife, Anna Catharina Petersdotter (married on December 8, 1848). Peter and Anna emigrated to America in 1864, and settled in Swedona in 1865, which was then known as Berlin, Illinois. Peter and Anna lived on a farm south of Ophiem, Knox County, Illinois. They had ten children: Peter Johan August, Maria Christina, Johannes Magnus, Johanna Mathilda, Johannes Magnus, Johanna Mathilda, Peter Johan August, Johanna Christina, Charles Oscar, Frank Otto Theodore. It should be noted that when the earlier children died that later children were given the same names. All children had a last name of Peterson, except Charles Oscar and Frank Otto Theodore, whose last name was Johnson.
