He was a Gunnery Sergeant in the USMC, serving in the Korean War, and retired on July 5, 1967. He and his wife opened Sophia V. West Florist on May 1, 1965, of which he was the President. He was a former member of the Hanover Lions Club and had held many offices, including President. He loved his family, golf and fishing. Mr. West was a member of Winter Park Presbyterian Church.
