He was member of ((Click On blue to open))""the Fighting McCooks", an Ohio family that had 17 members fight for the Union during the Civil War as soldiers, sailors, chaplains and doctors. Though over age 65 when the Civil War began, Dr. McCook acted as a volunteer physician for the Union Army, and was also a key advisor on medical matters to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Dr. McCook's efforts on behalf of the Union were so strenuous that his health began to fail, and he did not resume practicing medicine after the war ended.
