SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- James M. Bennett, 83, of South Sioux City died Friday, April 14, 2006, at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dan Wittrock officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in South Sioux City. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church.
James M. Bennett was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Newcastle, Neb., the son of James and Susan (Dougherty) Bennett. He grew up in Newcastle and graduated from Newcastle High School. He then attended Wayne State College.
He married Mary E. Bakken on May 12, 1947, in Sioux City. Jim worked for H&H Shoe Store and in Younkers shoe department. He then worked for Walkers Shoe Store from 1960 to 1995.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of South Sioux City; a son, Michael Bennett and his wife, Patsy of Eureka, Mo.; a daughter, Suzie Dorcey and her husband, Pat of Hubbard, Neb.; six grandchildren, Kyle Bennett, Brian Bennett, Ellie Bennett, Nick Dorcey, Patrick Dorcey and Molly Dorcey; and a great-granddaughter, Madison.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Lowe, Esther Crombie and Eileen Kneifl; and seven brothers, Isadore, Lawrence, Raymond, Melvin, Robert, Levi and Leslie.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Jim's family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice of Siouxland in lieu of flowers.
