Last Member of Pioneer Family Dies


Adeline Elizabeth Meriwether, last surviving member of one of Kentucky's oldest families, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday at her home, 969 Cherokee Road. She was 88.

She was a direct descendant of John J. Crittenden, and early Kentucky governor; of Meriwether Lewis, famed for the Lewis and Clark expedition, and of Zachary Taylor. She was the granddaughter of the late Col. Edmund Taylor, of Frankfort.

Miss Meriwether was a graduate of Collegiate School for Girls. She made her debut in Louisville in 1898, with the late Mrs. Cole Porter. She was a former member of the Colonial Dames.

Her brother, the late Edmund T. Meriwether, former vice president and cashier of Citizens Fidelity Bank & Trust Co., died in 1961.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane. A private burial service will be in Cave Hill Cemetery. The body will be the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday.
