Riley Wilder accompanied his family to Dyer IN, where he married Harriet Minerva Caldwell, daughter of John and Minerva (Hill) Caldwell, who were residing at Westford VT at the time of Harriet's birth on 4 July 1830. In 1837 the Caldwells moved to Lake County IN, but in 1847 they migrated farther west, to Baraboo WI. By 1852 Riley and Harriet moved to Baraboo to be near the Caldwells, who had discovered the fertile farmland of central Wisconsin. In their later years, Riley and Harriet lived with Jane and August Martiny, and it is through Jane's granddaughter, Evelyn Stewart of Baraboo, that we have some clear memories of Harriet, who was short and frail, but with very large, bright brown eyes. She kept her hair black by dipping her comb into a clear colored mixture in a jar on her bureau. In her little dress with a little white collar she looked like Old Mother Hubbard. Evelyn recalled a visit when August drove his fringeless surrey, carrying Riley and Harriet, to their home along the Wisconsin River. Riley gently led Harriet into the house for an all-day visit. They brought along a bag of brown sugar with a sizeable bag of walnuts tucked in the top, and during the visit they made fudge for everyone, a treat to delight especially the children. On 26 June 1905 Harriet died of heart failure, but Riley survived until 31 August 1908. From the previous October until July, he had visited his children and their families in South Dakota. But after a fishing trip at Delton with his friend John Iber he succumbed to a lung ailment.
