Maurice was born in Rottenburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany where he attended school and then became a apprentice in a marble works. He attended the State university of Württemberg for 3 years and studied architecture. He was then employed in Switzerland, working on the castle near Rhine Fall and the Post office at Basel and from there to France to work on the depot at Strasbourg. He oversaw the construction of the customs house at Beerfelden and upon it's completion he decided to immigrate to America, arriving in New York in the fall of 1854.

While there there he again met Anna M. Volmer, a school mate from Rottenburg. He and Anna Marie then joined his brother Charles in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada where they were married at the St. Mary's Church on May 8, 1955. They lived in Canada until 1859 when his brother Charles who had accepted a offer to survey Freeborn, Co., MI decided to return to Germany and sold Maurice the land he had recd in Freeborn.

Maurice helped organize the township of Albert Lea and was the first treasurer and first assessor. The family lived on the farm for 18 years and in 1876, Maurice began a Marble Monument business at the corner of Washington and Clark St. and the family then moved into town. He was later assisted in the business by his son Franklin.

Maurice and Anna Maria lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Maurice died 3 Jan 1917 and Anna Maria in 1918. They are buried beside each other in Graceland Cemetery.
