Son of Alford (1699-1741) and 2nd wife Elizabeth (Robinson) Butler (b.1 Mar 1715; m.11 Nov 1736)(ref.NEHGR 32(1878):35 & V/R). The 2nd of at least 4 generations named Alford (after immigrant ancestor, Mary (Alford) Butler), m. Eunice (West)(b.2 Dec 1734; m.27 Jan 1763). A Boston bookseller, like his 17th c. ancestor Hezekiah Usher, the earliest in N.America. During the Revolutionary War, like many in commercial life, his family were Loyalists, re-locating temporarily to Portsmouth,NH. His son Alford (b. circa 1763) moved to the Pemaquid, Maine, region, marr. a dau. of Loyalists and the first two of his children were b. at St Andrews, Charlotte co., N.B., Canada, bef. the family returned to Portsmouth,NH, & southern Maine circa 1790. Alford lived long enough (age 88+) to return to Boston. (See death cert. of eldest granddaughter, Rebecca (Butler) Wilton (1787-1872 at Groton,NH) showing her birth at St Andrews, New Brunswick.)
