Jacob was a tailor by trade who owned several small parcels of land outside of the village of Ottweiler, Rheinish Prussia. In May 1846 Louis Kieffer, his wife's only brother, wrote to them from America urging them to leave Germany, and to come join him. The family was all called together to discuss the opportunity, and as the news of their intentions spread, several neighbors joined them in their plans. After an all-night consultation, eight of the families agreed to migrate. On June 8, 1846 their journey to America began. Sixty-two days later they arrived at their destination of Dansville, NY. (As documented in the Braunschweig Family History, written in 1940 by Jacob's grandson, Edward Braunschweig.)
