In the 1901 census, he was living at 28 Lower Oriel Street, Dublin, with his parents Thomas and Frances [née Dowman] Byrne and their five other children.
Alfred was aged 18, a Grocer's Assistant.
His father was a 49 year old Engine Fitter at the nearby Dock Yard. In the 1911 census, Thomas described himself as a Marine Engineer.
