Greenlawn Burial Ground of Many Legends in Franklin
“In this grave lie six infants unnamed.”
So reads a passage on a small gravestone at Greenlawn Cemetery along the outskirts of Franklin where history lies asleep.
Since the early days of 1845, thousands of stories have been laid to rest with the remains of Johnson county citizens – remembered only by faded markers.
One such legend is recorded on the tombstone of three-year old Thressa Richey [sic- stone shows ‘Theressa Ritchey’], who died in September of 1845, the daughter of John and Mary Richey.
But in the same grave, says the marker, lie six infants unnamed and apparently the children of John and Mary Richey. Some historians believe the children may have been sextuplets who died shortly after birth.
No records, aside from the marker, were left behind and the “sextuplets” and their three-year-old sister remain a tragic mystery at Greenlawn.
