Carthage News July 22, 1897; "Died--At home of her parents, Capt. and Mrs. J. P. Ryan, Miss Lillian Ryan, of typhoid fever, July 19th 12 P. M. Miss Ryan was one of Howard's most popular and highly esteemed young ladies and her many friends extend their sympathy to her bereaved parents. Funeral was held from the Catholic Church Wednesday morning. Internment in Howard cemetery."
(NOTE: This news report erroneously indicates Lillian's mother, Eliza Simpkins Ryan, as still living in 1897; Eliza died in March 1888.)

Also same issue of Carthage News: "Miss Lilly Ryan, one of Miner County's leading school teachers, died suddenly Tuesday night."

Miner County Democrat July 24, 1897: "Death of Miss Elizabeth Agnes Ryan, daughter of Capt. J. P. Ryan, has cast a gloom over the people in this vicinity. Miss Ryan was in her 23rd year when death overtook her and was one of the graduates of Howard public school being a member of the class of '92. Her death resulted from an attack of typhoid fever and her demise occurred on Monday evening at 11:30 July 19. The funeral was held from the Catholic church in Howard Wednesday at 10:00 and remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery east of town."

No marker on grave. From St. Joseph Cemetery records and sequence of Ryan family deaths. Lilly is buried next to her mother on the south side of the Ryan plot.
