Joseph Buffington Cash shared the same name as his grandfather Joseph Buffington Cash 1822-1888

Joe Cash was the youngest son of Thomas Marion & Bell Ayers Cash. He was always unsure of his actual birthdate. On September 12,1918 his Draft Registration card holds the earliest confirmed date as February 22,1885. His social security death index lists February 21,1888 and his gravestone lists February 22,1888.

He and Florence Swinney, his 1st wife married On August 29,1905 in Franklin County, Alabama. They had one child Gordia Pollard Cash. This would also be his death date 58 years later.

Lillie LouEllen Arnold, his 2nd wife and Joe were married on February 2, 1930 in Franklin County,, Alabama. Joe and Lillie had 2 children. My mother Lillie Flo Cash Rogers and her older brother Billy Joe Cash.
Joe Cash was a trader. He and Lillie moved several times as Joe traded houses frequently.
He also liked a good stiff drink. There are stories about his mule and a pull behind wagon. After going into town and having maybe one drink too many, during political campaigns especially, after drinking robustly, he would plop into the back of his wagon and his old mule would head him home.
He loved discussing politics.
As television was being introduced into every home Joe said "television would be the end of people visiting". He was correct.
He was adored by his only daughter Lillie Flo Cash Rogers.
He was a robust, snuff dipping, jovial much loved man. In her journals, after his passing his wife Lillie missed him so much as did my mother.

In 1918 he and first wife Florence lived on Rural Route 2 . This would also become the address of his daughter Lillie Flo and husband Edward Rogers in the late 1950's where she raised her children on the old Butler home place. Ed resides there still (Dec. 2014).

In later years when he became too feeble to walk into town I can remember him sitting on the roadside near the old railroad depot in Phil Campbell waving to and watching the cars passing by his home. He made a make shift bench to sit on.
I remember him always wearing a grey top coat and white shirts.
My grandfather died when I was 10 years old. But his memory is vivid. (Linda Rogers Hill Peck)
