Adolph Schulz was born 15 OCT 1855 in Kowalewka, Płock, Poland to Carl and Wilhelmine (Schulz) Schulz. At some point, perhaps after the Polish uprising in 1865 when many German settlers moved to escape Russia's crackdown on the Poles, his family moved to Klein Gluscha, Volhynia, now in northwest Ukraine about 40 miles northeast of Kiev, not far from the border today of Belarus. When he was an adult, he worked as a surveyor for the Russian government.

On 5 OCT 1882, Adolph married Florentine (Hannes) Kutzner in the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Rozyszcze, Volhynia. She was the daughter of Frederick and Pauline (-?-) Hannes and the widow of Gotfried Kutzner. She had had at least three sons by Kutzner: John Karl (called Charles), Gottfried and John Gustave (called Gus). When they were grown all three sons emigrated to Connecticut, United States.

Adolph and Florentine had five children in Klein Gluscha. They were Anna Wilhelmina, twin boys Adolph and Oskar, Alida Wilhelmina and Rudoph Herman. The first three children died in Klein Gluscha in infancy, but the two youngest survived.

On 24 JAN 1903, the family sailed from Hamburg on the S.S. Bulgaria and arrived in New York on 14 FEB 1903. Their passage had been paid by Charles Kutzner. The family moved in with Gus Kutzner in his home on Front Street, Middletown, Connecticut. Adolph worked as a metal inspector. Schulz was spelled as Schultz, Alida became Lydia and Rudolph became Ralph.

Florentine developed kidney disease and died on 12 OCT 1907. She is buried in the Kutzner plot in Old Farm Hill Cemetery, Middletown.

On 15 AUG 1908, Adolph married Augusta Woike. She was the daughter of Daniel and Eufrosine (Cabel/Zabel) Woike. They had two children: Carl William and Aileen May. They lived on Maple Street, Middletown where the children were born. Adolph left his job as a metal inspector and the two opened a German restaurant on lower Court Street, Middletown, catering to the people who came on the river boats that docked at the bottom of the street. Augusta did the cooking for all three meals a day. The family lived above the restaurant.

When they retired from the restaurant business, the family moved to what was then 40 Front Street, now 57. Adolph filled the yard with gardens.

Adolph died on 20 MAR 1926. The cause of death was listed as acute myocarditis. He is buried with Florentine in the Kutzner plot in Old Farm Hill Cemetery. His gravestone no longer exists.
