One of ten sons of Col. Robert Melville and Catherine Cooper to served in the C.S.A. during the Civil War. He died with 4 of his other brothers, and 4 brothers wounded and 1 unscathed. Born in Maury/Lewis Co. Tennessee.

Samuel Gwin Cooper was captured at Fort Donelson when the Confederates there surrendered. He was transported to Camp Douglas in Chicago where he died a few months later of pneumonia. He is buried along with thousands of other Confederate prisoners of war in the huge burial mound outside of what was Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois.
