U.S. Congressman. Moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1856, he was employed as a clerk and editor of the Milwaukee Free Democrat, (1859-60). He moved to California, in 1860, was editor of the San Francisco Times and Placerville Republican, studied law, was admitted to the bar, practiced law and was a member of the California Assembly, (1862-63). He moved to Nevada, in 1863, elected a member of the convention for the Nevada State constitution in 1864, a Union nominee for Territorial Delegate to Congress in 1864 and District Attorney of Washoe County, (1865-66). In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress, serving until 1871. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he practiced law, mostly in Nevada, Utah and Arizona. While in these states, he represented such notable clients to include Brigham Young, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and Ed Tewksbury. Returning to California, he was a writer for the Los Angeles Times, (1909-16). He died in retirement at age 85.
