BRAKEBILL, DOROTHY LAWHON - 96, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Homewood at Crumland Farms where she had resided since 2006. Born on February 11, 1915 in Knoxville, TN, she was the daughter of the late Wiley Blount Lawhon and Edith (Bolinger) Lawhon.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her identical twin sister, Doris Lawhon Stout in 2008.

Dorothy graduated from Knoxville High School in 1933, and then studied music. A music enthusiast all her life, she played cello with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for a number of years. She was a life member of the Friday Music Club of Washington, D.C. and an avid supporter of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

On September 29, 1934, Dorothy Lawhon married James H. Brakebill, Jr. They were married for 75 years, until his death in 2009. Dorothy and James (Jimmy) made their home in Tennessee until World War II when he was commissioned a line officer in the U.S. Army Reserves and was ordered to active duty. After the war, he was appointed a line officer in the Regular Army and they were stationed at various posts in the United States, Germany, mainland China and Thailand. Upon retirement, Lt. Col and Mrs. Brakebill made their home in Frederick, MD for more than 35 years.

Mrs. Brakebill is survived by a son, James H. Brakebill III and wife, Mary, of Destin Florida; three grandchildren, Lisa Brakebill of Stanley, NC, Scott Brakebill and wife, Katy, of Woodsboro, MD, John Brakebill and wife, Beth, of Towson, MD and their mother, Barbara Brakebill of Frederick, MD; four great grandchildren, Kristy Brakebill and fiancé, Jake Houck of Elizabethtown, PA, SPC Timothy Brakebill and wife, Chelsea, of Camp Casey, South Korea, Amy Brakebill of Woodsboro, MD, and Holly Brakebill of Towson, MD; two great-great grandchildren, Benjamin Brakebill and Gracie Ann Brakebill of South Korea; a niece, Fredericka Garlinghouse and husband, Richard, of Marietta, GA and a nephew, David Stout and wife, Theresa, of Powell, TN.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3:30PM, June 13, 2011 at the Homewood at Crumland Farms Chapel.

Mrs. Brakebill will be laid to rest with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery on July 5, 2011 at 3:00PM.

In lieu of flowers; charitable contributions can be made to Hospice of Frederick Co., Homewood at Crumland Farms, All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick, or a charity of one's choice.
