Henry Jacob Fruhling, 83, of Brownsville, died Thursday, May 9, 1996 at Valley Regional Medical Center.

Born in Podhajce, Poland, he had been a resident of Brownsville since 1952. He attended the University of Warsaw, Poland from 1932 the 1936 and received a degree in Polish law. He emigrated to the United States in 1937 and his proudest moment in life was when he became a naturalized American citizen in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 30th Infantry Division until 1944. He was decorated for his military service, twice receiving the Bronze Star Medal with cluster in also the European Campaign Medal and the U.S. Combat Infantryman's Badge. After his discharge from the U.S. Army, he joined the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, which had the sole task of caring for refugees and liberated concentration camp survivors. He was in charge of 15 displaced persons camps. After the war, he was employed by a retail clothing chain. He was sent to Texas as administrative supervisor of clothing stores throughout the southern areas of Texas.
In 1959, he began a partnership in business with his brother-in-law, Ralph Frapart. This fashionable ladies clothing store, "Ralph's" was in the family's Palm Village shopping center in Brownsville. He was a member of the American Legion, Bnai Brith and Temple Beth El. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Maria Fruhling, a younger brother, Sigmund and a younger sister, Elsie, all who perished in the Holocaust.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Dorfman Fruhling of Brownsville and a daughter, Judy Fruhling Avila of Brownsville.

Visitation will be held today at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home Stateroom B, 945 Palm Blvd.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home East Chapel with Rabbi Ed Rosenthal officiating. Interment will follow at the Hebrew cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Frapart, Lewis Frapart, Jules Frapart, Ross Frapart, David Frapart and Sammy Levine. Honorary pallbearers will be Haskell Frosch, Bernard Levine, Sam Silverman, Ruben Edelstein, Leon Horn, Raymond Wolf, Israel Liska, Dr. Roberto Robles, Henry Havre, Frank Mathers and Donald Ferguson.
