Carolyn Allen, 87 of Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Wilmington, DE she was the daughter of the late Roswell and Barbara Cahoon Latchum.
Carolyn lived a long and full life, the arc of which was set early by her courtship and marriage to her beloved husband, J. Their first date was New Year's Eve, 1944; she accepted his Sigma Chi pin on Valentine's Day, 1945; they were engaged on March 5 (her birthday), married on April 4, and had their first of five children on January 23, 1946. So began a life rich with family and community, and surprising achievements, such as being the mother of the longest baby ever born at Mt. Sinai Hospital, in Chicago, Il. Among her more publically noteworthy accomplishments, she was a life long member and National President (1963) of Sigma Alpha Service Sorority. After moving to Lake of the Woods, she immediately became an active member of the community. She was a Charter member of the Lake of the Woods Lioness Club in 1987 and president in 1989; she was for twenty years an Elder of the Lake of the Woods Church and until two months ago the Editor of the Lake of the Woods Church Mouse (newsletter). She volunteered at the After School Club and Vacation Bible School at the church. She served on and was Vice President of the Lake of the Woods Board of Directors. She also played in the Lake of the Woods Handbell Choir for over 15 years, often under the direction of her daughter, Barbara. In the early years of family life, she was a dedicated mother involved in innumerable civic and educational clubs and activities surrounding her children's activities. After her children had been raised, she branched out into new directions, perhaps reaching her zenith as Grandma Extraordinaire, attending weddings, graduations and productions, but also just being there as a smiling cheering face for every step they took. In her later decades, she managed to finish the task of visiting all fifty of the American states, and four continents in addition. She traveled with her children and grandchildren to Europe, China, Australia, and New Zealand, and perhaps the most exotic and, in any event most recent destination, Mahoning Valley, Ohio, simply to cheer on her youngest grandchild in a hockey game. Perhaps competing in exoticness with Mahoning Valley, she went to the Highland Games and the Colquohon Klan family gathering in Scotland. As she grew older, she seemed to grow younger. She honed her already impressive skills at bridge, getting better each year. Another sign of her growing younger with each year was here mastery of the internet, which she used not just for email but to play internet bridge. Toward the end of her life, she took up the mantle of family historian. She was as loved by her children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as she loved them, and she will be dearly missed.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, J Allen, a son, Mikel Jon Allen, and a brother, Medford Latchum.
She is survived by her children, Craig Allen and his wife Sarah, Ronald Allen and his wife Julie, Richard Allen and his wife Brenda, and Barbara Allen; grandchildren, Sarah Allen and her husband Timothy Powderly, Adrienne Cohen and her husband Michael, Jeremiah Allen and his wife Angel, Nathan Allen and his wife Erin, Shelby Sender and her husband Daniel, Tabitha Allen, Laura Allen, Michael Allen, and Conor Allen; two great grandchildren, Marissa and Ethan Allen, and one on the way.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 8, 2009 at Lake of the Woods Church with Pastor Tom Schafer officiating.
