OBITUARY Diamond Drill (Crystal Falls newspaper) July 18 1914 "West Side News: Pioneer Dies”
Clarence McDermott, aged 87 years, one of the pioneers of this district, died at his home near Ice Lake last Sunday of old age. The funeral was held from St. Agnes church Wednesday and burial was in Iron River cemetery. The only known surviving relative, Mrs. Jacobs of Minneapolis, and her husband attended the funeral. She is the daughter of a niece of Mr. McDermott who died some time ago.
Mr. McDermott came to the Iron River district 34 years ago and engaged in the business of timber cruising and logging. He came here from New York. He was not married and little was known about his relations. A sister of whom he often spoke died in New York several years ago at the age of 93 years.

Prosecuting Attorney Handy received a message from a man named John Ward at Elizabeth, N.J. asking him to investigate the disappearence of Michael Ward from Iron River last July. Ward was an eccentric personage who owned forty acres of land near the Hall farm in Bates township. He came to Crystal Falls one day last July then went direct to Iron River. He stopped at the McDermott house that evening, then went to his farm. That was the last seen of him. One day McDermott went to Ward's cabin and found that Ward had put on his best clothes before leaving. It is now a question as to his whereabouts.

The boiler, engine and other parts of a saw mill outfit were received the fore part of the week, consigned to Clarence McDermott and others, who will during the summer select a mill site and erect a hardwood saw mill, and be in readiness to saw next spring, or probably during a part of the winter. This plant in connection with the Iron River Land & Lumber company's, which is already being got in readiness to begin sawing next month, will make Iron River a first-class market for the sale of all the hardwood, basswood, etc., in this vicinity, and will be of immense benefit to the entire community. In 1912 I went fishing with my father on the Brule river one day in May.
We set out downstream from Wheeler dam west of Ski-Brule Mountain.
We hiked back up river to a point near the old McDermott’s landing all the way to Wheeler dam.
INFORMATION FROM DALE SAFFORD says Clarence McDermott held the original title to the land where I now live (Sec 25 T43N R35W SE1/4 NW1/4 N1/2 S1/2 10 acres & Sec 25 T43N R35W SE1/4 NW1/4 S1/2 N1/2 W1/2 5 acres where my house is located). He was granted the homestead title on Aug 6 1889 to Sec 25 T43N R35W E1/2 W1/2 which was 160 acres. That hilly forested land now includes the Iron River Care Center, the Michigan State Police Post, the US Forest Service Office, Secretary of State office, and Lakeland Baptist Church. A later title April 17 1911 says McDermott is a bachelor; another document dated Oct 2 1907 also says he is unmarried.
