Dr. C.C. Arnold

Dr. Charles Calvin "C.C." Arnold, age 87, of Owenton, passed away Monday Sept. 29, 2009 at the Gallatin County Healthcare following an extended illness. Born March 25, 1922, in Squiresville, he was the son of the late Ira Lee and Ruth Azalee Reeve Arnold. He was the widower of Hazel Jo Smith Arnold whom he married on Feb. 10, 1956; he was also preceded in death by his son, Larry Calvin Arnold, granddaughter Jenna, his brother, Ira Lee Arnold, Jr. and his sister, Eleanor reeve Ogden. Dr. Arnold was as devoted member of the Owenton First Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School Superintendent and for Sunday School Teacher. At the time of his death he had been a dentist for 64 years, one of the oldest in the state. Dr. Arnold followed his Uncle, General, Richard C. Arnold and his brother, Ira Lee Arnold, Jr. into the medical field. He graduated Owen County High School in 1940. He attended the University of Kentucky, graduating in 1943. He finished the four year program in almost three years. He was then accepted to the University of Louisville Dental School in 1946. As World War II broke out, desperate for doctors and dentists, the medical schools were put on accelerated programs (three years and three summers). Upon graduation of this program he was enlisted to the Army as a Private 1st Class, serving the US Army Occupation Forces in Verdun and Metz France. Graduating Dental School in 1946, Dr. C.C. moved to Eminence and built an office onto the Henry County Clinic. He was drafted in 1949 and reported to Fort Knox on January 3, 1950 for two years of service, 13 months of which was in Germany in the Infantry. Dr. Arnold's first local office was above the old Farmer's Bank at 125 W. Seminary St. In 1954, Mr. John Thomas built Dr. CC a three chair office onto the existing Thomas hardware building at 116 N. Madison. The cost for the office was $15,000. While serving as Dentist, Dr. Charles Arnold was always interested in seeing growth in his community and how he could help make it a better place to live. He flew to Washington D.C. twice to help obtain funding for the Owen Hospital and in 1954 acquired a $138,000 grant for the Owen County Health Department which was built onto the current Hospital. He served as an active member of the Hospital Board, Water board, City Council and Health Board many years. As Mayor of Owenton the city acquired $502,000 in grants for the thirty-two units of Federal Housing. On January 10, 1970 an $85,604 grant was obtained from the Kentucky Crime Commission for the Owenton Police Department and $2,300 grant for a police Cruiser. In 1973 $1,500,000 Industrial Bonds enabled Owenton to sign a twenty-two year lease with Dr. Scholls for a new factory. Also in 1973 a $126,000 grant for the Owen county Library was obtained and a $500,000 grant to build a city lake. Then $2,000,000 was granted to Carroll County to build a waterline from Carrollton to Worthville to Perry Park and Gratz, District #1 had added approximately 825 customers in 2004. This was $4,853,904 in Grants Monies to benefit Owen County. Dr. Arnold is survived by his children, Joe (Susan) Arnold of La Grange; Jim (Barbara) Arnold of Chaing Mai, Thailand and Dr. Joy (David) Arnold-Morse of Owenton; a sister, May Blanchard of Tucson, AZ; 10 grandchildren, Nate, Leah, Raenan, Wesley, Judah, Isaiah, Titus, Daniel, Leilani and Timothy and 2 great grandchildren, Katie Grace and Hunter. Arrangements are being handled by McDonald & New Funeral Homes. Visitation will be held at the Main Street location on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 4pm until 8 pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11am at the Owenton First Baptist Church with Bro. Jim Craigmyle officiating. Burial will be in the Owenton Cemetery.
