John Shelby was born May 24,1785 at Castalian Springs (Bledsoe's Lick), Sumner County,Tennessee. Attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania under the most famous physician and teacher of the day Dr.Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He served in the War of 1812 with Gen. Andrew Jackson where he lost an eye. Shelby served as a state senator from 1815 to 1817. Shelby Street,Shelby Park,and Shelby Street Bridge were named in his honor.
