Warren Wells, who owned T.W. Wells General Store in South Hill for more than 50 years, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997. He was 90 and lived in Baskerville in Mecklenburg County. Mr. Wells opened the general store in 1932. It sold everything from bib overalls and shoelaces to penny candy and soda pop. During tobacco-harvesting months, Mr. Wells also worked as an accountant for the Virginia Warehouse in South Hill. He retired from both jobs in 1986. Mr. Wells also was a justice of the peace. He was a 32nd-degree Mason. He was a church trustee, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Bethany Baptist Church. As church superintendent, it was his responsibility to open the church for services and Sunday school. He was the widower of Inez Newman Wells. Survivors include a daughter, Katherine W. Proffitt of South Hill; a brother, Herman "Pete" Wells of Chase City; and a sister, Audie Piercey of La Crosse. Funeral: Bethany Baptist Church. Burial: Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery.
