He was preceded in death by a son, John Thomas Amato, additionally, he was predeceased by a brother, August J. Amato; a half-brother, Savory T. Amato; and a half-sister, Rosine Finn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Martha Black Amato, formely of Crozet, and now Mount Sidney. He is also survived by his daughters, Marsha L. Amato-Greenspan and her husband, Jeffrey, of Wilmington, Delaware, Robin T. Amato of Charlottesville and Kimberly Amato Hepler and her husband, David, and their children, Catherine Mae and Elizabeth Lee of Fort Defiance; and a son, John Thomas Amato II of Waynesboro.
Tom was a graduate of Grandby High School in Norfolk, where he played football. After graduating, he enlisted in the Marines and served in the Korean War. Upon returning from the war, he attended VIrginia Polytechnical Institute. He was employed by Sperry Marine, a division of Tenneco, and retired after 32 year as a Mechanical and Standards Engineer.
While living in Crozet, Tom was a member of the Crozet Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. For 50 years, he was a member and a past President of the Crozet Lions Club, upon moving to Mount Sidney he transferred to the Augusta Lions Club where he was a member and was currently serving on the Board of Directors. He was an avid golfer and totally devoted to family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2011, conducted by the Augusta Lions Club. All are welcome. Family will receive friends, from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2011, at Anderson Funeral Home, Crozet. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at Hillsboro Cemetery, Crozet.
Tom's request was that all attending not wear black, rather joyful colors in celebration of his life.
Family request donations be made to the Augusta Lions Club, P.O. Box 2613, Staunton, VA 24402, in lieu of flowers.
