Born in Kentucky to Luther and Josie (nee Lucas) Pruitt, he worked as a chauffeur for a doctor's family in Bement, Illinois. There he met his wife, Ora Mae Vanlandingham. Together they had two children, Helen Louise and Elbert Eugene. When Helen moved to Perry, Kansas, after her marriage to Daniel Steinmetz, Elbert and Ora Mae moved to Kansas and began farming. Ora Mae passed away in 1950, and Elbert left for California to be close to his children who were living there. He was living with his daughter, Helen and her family, including his grandsons, when he passed away.
