Elijah was a carpenter and blacksmith and also kept a peach and apple orchard. They had a long house that required going outside to move from room to room. He once posted bail ( 1877 ) and later gave up a 3000 pound load of tobacco and a two horse wagon in 1878 to rescue his father-in-law from a bad debt suit. He served as Brown County Recorder as a Democrat following the 1916 election. Elijah built the Clark Church near Gnaw Bone Indiana. He and Sabra are buried in the Clark Church cemetery in Washington Township along with their infant daughter Eva and Elijah's parents. Elijah died April 14, 1926 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elvie Lane, from chronic myocarditis, Sabra died from nephritis at home on August 8, 1920, eight miles NE of Nashville. She was a member of the Clark Church and was active in church circles.
The updated headstone was purchased by my father, Ed Lucas, Sabra's grandson.
