Lee August Holdeman was born on August 24, 1909, to Frank and Emma Overholt Holdeman, at Hesston, Kansas.

Death came peacefully on August 28, 1990, at the Beauregard Nursing Home, DeRidder, Louisiana. He had just passed his eighty-first birthday. Death was caused by a heart attack.

At the age of eight he had the sad experience of losing his mother, but one year later his aunt, Fanny Overholt, became his second mother. He spent his first forty years in the vicinity of Hesston, Kansas, making a living by farming and shearing sheep.

At the age of thirteen he committed his life to God and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, at the Meridian Congregation, Hesston, Kansas, on March 16, 1923, by Min F C Fricke. He remained faithful to these vows until death.

On January 19, 1935, he was married to Winona Elnora Burns at the home of her parents in Lamar, Colorado, by Min Jake Friesen. They shared a little more than forty-one years together and were blessed with seven sons and four daughters. When Mother was taken by death on February 23, 1976, he was very lonely. Their son Timothy and his family moved into the home place with him for two years, for which he was grateful. After that he lived alone for four years, often entertaining a houseful of the grandchildren for the summer months, which was greatly enjoyed by him and them.

In August of 1949, our parents and the nine older children moved south, making our home at DeRidder, Louisiana, where he lived for the last forty-one years. He was employed by the Long-Bell and International Paper companies for twenty-six years, until retirement.

On June 6, 1982 he found a remedy for his loneliness when he took Ruby Litwiller Wesenburg, of Ithaca, Michigan, as his bride. He gained two daughters by this marriage. Their happy arrangement of spending the summers in Michigan and the winters in Louisiana came to an abrupt end three summers ago when sickness and its complications intervened.

In 1979 he suffered a massive heart attack from which he recuperated. Two weeks after his second marriage he suffered a severe stroke, from which he also recovered. Since then he has suffered other strokes, one which left him with halting speech. He also suffered complications of diabetes, including five amputations. He bore much agony and pain, but through it all his faith remained firm, and with patience he looked beyond to when he could go home to heaven.

Our sister, Bonnie, lovingly cared for him at home as long as she could. He was admitted to the St Francis Nursing Home, Oberlin, Louisiana, in September of 1988, where he stayed until a month ago when he was moved to the Beauregard Nursing Home in DeRidder.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Ruby; seven sons and five daughters: Denton and wife Karen, Detroit, Texas; David and wife Joyce, Clarksdale, Mississippi; Adin and wife Lillian, Brookston, Texas; Arlyn and wife Ann, Leland, Mississippi; Samuel and wife Marcy, Greenville, Mississippi; Timothy and wife Aldene, DeRidder, Louisiana; Daniel and wife Mary, Detroit, Texas; Marilyn and husband Bob Smith, West Point, Mississippi; Joy and husband Chester Smith, DeRidder, Louisiana; Rosemary and husband Joe Decker, Detroit, Texas; Bonnie and husband Arnold Smith, DeRidder, Louisiana; Sandra and husband Tim Everette, Atmore, Alabama; forty-three grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; three brothers: Adin, Hesston, Kansas; Willard and Wilford, Moundridge, Kansas; four sisters: Dorothy Boeckner and Nina Holdeman, Hesston, Kansas; Emma Burns, Rio Verde, Brazil; Twila Unruh, Moundridge, Kansas; one brother-in-law, John Jost, Moundridge, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Velma Holdeman, Hesston, Kansas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Those preceding him in death are: his parents; wife Elnora; daughter Beverly Smith; three grandchildren: Judith and Harold, and Aaron; two brothers: Noah and Archie; one sister, Sylvia Jost; three brothers-in-law: Daniel Boeckner, Vernard Unruh, and Denton Burns.
Funeral services were held at the Highland Congregation of the Church of God in Christ, DeRidder, Louisiana, on September 1, 1990. The home ministry was in charge of the service, with the burial in the church cemetery.
