Harry was born in Suchodol, a town then in Galicia, a province of the former Austrian Empire; it is now Sukhodil, Ukraine. He was a son of Jakob Mordechai Weitzner and Feige Lustig and a brother of Max (Meir) Weitzner.

Harry immigrated to the United States in August 1913 aboard the S.S. Kaiserin Augusta Victoria, traveling as Herman Weitzner.
