After an illness of nearly a month's duration Mrs. Adeline Jenks Aikman died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ashburn W. Truitt in Dana, Monday evening, February 19, 1917. She had been a sufferer from rheumatism for years and during the last two years of her life she was almost helpless.
The deceased was one of the pioneer women of Helt township. She was about 15 years old when her father, Tilly Jenks moved from Bono, Washington county, this state, in 1848 and settled on the Jenks farm north of Bono, Helt township. Others from Washington county joined the Jenks family and they called the new settlement Bono. Stephen Jenks, now 87 years old, is the only member of the family surviving.
Adeline Jenks was born November 28, 1833. She was married in 1856 to John B. Aikman and to this union five children were born. The oldest, a daughter, died at the age of six years in Montezuma. The family lived in Indianapolis a few years and then moved to Dana, where the husband died in 1878. Edgar P., Harry E. and Mrs. Clare Jordan are also deceased children.
She united with the Methodist church when 15 years old and was a devoted Bible reader and christian.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Wednesday morning by Rev. Chivington. Burial followed at the Bono cemetery.
