Actress. Noted throughout her career for portraying women older than herself, she was a respected star of British stage, screen, and television for more than 50 years. Raised in West Ham, she studied at a private girls' school and at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts prior to her 1951 professional debut as a minor character in playwright George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion". Through the 1950s Tyzack refined her art in various repertory theatres and from 1962 on was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her major break came with her portrayal of ‘Winifred’ in BBC's popular 1967 series "The Forsyte Saga". Appearing on the Broadway stage in New York City, New York twice, she was nominated for a Tony Award for a 1983 production of "All's Well That Ends Well" while she captured the honor for playing ‘Lotte Schoen’ in 1990's "Lettice and Lovage". Perhaps best known for her television work, Tyzack earned praise as the title character in 1971's "Cousin Bette", as ‘Antonia’ in the 1976 BBC "I, Claudius", and as ‘Miss Seymouer’ in "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" from the early 1990s. Much honored on the stage, she twice received the Olivier Award, for a 1981 revival of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" and for 2009's "The Chalk Garden". In the motion pictures she had roles in two of Stanley Kubrick's productions, "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) and the 1971 "A Clockwork Orange" as well as in director Woody Allen's 2005 "Match Point". Named Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1970, she was designated Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2010. She died after a short illness having appeared in the television series “EastEnders” until two months prior to her demise.
