William Barry was born circa 1754 in Fairfax Co., VA. He was a son of John Barry and Eleanor Wade Barry. William inherited his mother's portion of the Wade farm, which was previously owned by Eleanor's parents, Zephaniah Wade and Verlinda Pottinger Wade. His aunt, Verlinda/Valinda Wade, inherited the other half of the farm after her mother's death. Their property adjoined the estate of George Washington. As William was a minor at the time of his mother's death, his father handled his business affairs and refused to sell William's half-interest in the Wade farm to George Washington. William's maternal aunt, Verlinda/Valinda Wade, sold her share in the farm to George Washington in 1770. After William's father's death circa 1776, William sold his share of the farm to George Washington in 1783.

William and his wife, Sarah (unknown maiden name), relocated to Greenville District, SC. William was a veteran of the American Revolution. His file is available for review on fold3.com. After his wife's death and William's penniless condition, he moved to Benton Co., AL (now Calhoun Co., AL) to live with his only daughter, Ellender, and her husband, Salathiel Clements. He died at the Clements home on June 28, 1838. An obituary regarding his death was published in the Jacksonville Republican in 1838.

William and Sarah Barry had three known children:

James Barry
Robert C. Barry
Ellender Wade Barry
