Poet. He was one of the first to recognize literary possibilities of Negro dialect and character. Author of "Ships from the Sea" (poem). He also wrote "The Cemetery" and many other poems. He was originally buried in Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi. He was buried on Dec. 25, 1879, at Girod Street Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana. He was removed to Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri, on March 29, 1880.
