Joseph was a prominent person of his time, he was on the committee of Correspondence in 1773 and a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He is spoken of in 'History of Wells and Kennebunk' as Colonel of a regiment, and empowered also to enlist men for three years' service in the Revolution.
He served as Selectman, and as Representative to the General Court.
In 1781 was referred to as 'Gentlemen'.
