U.S. Congressman. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (1800, 04, 06) and a member of the New York State constitutional convention in 1801. During the War of 1812, he served as a Major in the U.S. Army and commanded a battalion of New York Volunteers in the defense of Sackets Harbor, on May 29, 1813. After the war, he was a judge of the New York circuit court for several years. In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress, serving until 1819 and reelected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, serving (1823-25).
