The son of Abraham Ladew and Sarah Smith, Stephen LaDew established himself in Albany and came to be involved in state government at the time of the fierce battle over whether or not to construct the Erie Canal. As confidential secretary to Gov. DeWitt Clinton of New York his responsibilities were great; but so was his power. The canal connected the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.
