Born in Florida, he was a resident of Spring City for the past 53 years. He was the son of the late Henry Wesley and Martha Bland Simmons, He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Ten Mile, Tenn. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He retired as a laborer for the Tennessee Valley Authority at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Pendergrass Simmons of Spring City; three daughters, Beaulah Grubb of Athens, Tenn., Carolyn Brady of Dayton and Donna Funicello Hicks of Graysville; six sons, Donald Ray Simmons and Dan Simmons, both of Ten Mile, Tenn., Shorty B. Simmons of Spring City, Eugene Odom Simmons of Spring City, DeWhitt Haven Simmons and DeWhight Steven Simmons, both of Spring City; two sisters, Anie Lee Sealy of Ponce De Leon, Fla., and Anie Lou McClain of Sanderson, Fla.; two brothers, William Simmons of Cotton Dale, Fla., and Willie Simmons of Panama City, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ivey officiating. Interment followed the services in Ewing Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.
