Abraham Van Doren.
Chaumont, Jan. 6. – Abraham Van Doren died at his home on Saturday afternoon, after an illness of nearly two weeks with pneumonia at the age of 82, leaving behind him a record of which his relatives and friends are justly proud. The passing of Mr. Van Doren brings to an end a life of usefulness.
Abraham Van Doren, son of Joseph and Hester (Becker) Van Doren, was born in the town of Glen, Montgomery County, Aug. 13, 1827. In the early part of 1836 he moved with his parents and their children to the town of Lyme, Jefferson County, which has since been his home. At the age of 18 he worked with the carpenters in building the house that is now known as the old Van Doren homestead and occupied by Jesse Reed. After that he and his brother, Cornelius, worked as carpenters in Cape Vincent and Watertown and also in this vicinity. Having obtained a start in life in this way, he bought a farm which has been his home ever since.
On April 20, 1856, he married Miss Ann Elizabeth Horton of Chaumont, who died Feb. 19, 1860. From this marriage there were two sons, J. Isaac and George Hanford, the latter dying June 8, 1861. On June 8, 1864, he married Miss Mary Nellis of St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, who still survives him. From the second marriage there were born and still survive, Walter Nellis Van Doren of Chaumont, Mrs. Henry L. George of Chaumont, Rev. Joseph Canfield Van Doren of Waterville, and Dr. George Bickford Van Doren of Watertown.
Mr. Van Doren was one of a family of ten children, four of whom are living; Cornelius of Watertown, William of Santa Ana, Cal., and Peter and Mary of Chaumont. He was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, holding the position as elder for many years.
The funeral was held Tuesday at his home at 2 p.m. Interment was made in Cedar Grove cemetery.
