Lt. Col. Homer J. Tennant, 87, of Lompoc, Calif., passed away peacefully at Mission Gardens in Lompoc Tuesday (Oct. 26, 2004).

Homer was born Dec. 16, 1916, in Reedy, a son of the late Allen N. Tennant and Mary Moore Tennant.

He attended Monumental Grade School and graduated from Barrackville High School in 1935. After high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and later worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. Homer enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on Dec. 6, 1941, and worked as a cook and radio operator.

He worked his way up to the U.S. Army Air Cadets, graduating in the class of 1943, at Luke Field, Ariz. After graduation, he realized his dream of becoming an active pilot, flying P-40 Warhawks, P-39 Air Cobras and the P-34 Lightenings. During his 23-year military career, he was awarded the Air Force Bronze Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After retirement from the Air Force in 1963, he made his home in the Lompoc area and continued to work for 15 more years at ITT/FEC. He was a member of the 70th Fighter Squadron and the Lions Club. His other interests were golfing, languages, geology and history of civilizations.

He is survived by his sister, Marjorie Campbell of Dayton, Tenn.; a brother, Richard Allen "Pete" Tennant of of Illinois; several nieces and nephews; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirin and James Reed; three sons and their spouses, David and Carol Tennant, and Jarrett and Margaret Tennant, all of Lompoc, Calif., and Bruce Tennant of Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Loristeen Story "Teena" of Fairview, who died in February 2004; sisters, Nell Tennant, Edith Tennant, Jesse Tennant and Edna Rubinton; and a brother, Howard Tennant.

A celebration of life for Homer was held Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
