Following his participation in talent competitions, he signed with Polydor Records in 1977 and released his first albums. In 1984, his song "Monica" became the best-selling single in Hong Kong history. In 1986, he starred in the movie “A Better Tomorrow”. This film had a profound influence on the Hong Kong film industry. In 1989, he announced his retirement from the music industry as a pop singer. He continued his music career as a songwriter. He won the 1994 Japan Film Critics Society Award for best actor for his performance in “Farewell My Concubine”. His last concert tour took place in Hong Kong and overseas from 2000 to 2001. Suffering from depression, he committed suicide by jumping off the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong.
