Henry served as a Private in Company A of the 11th Michigan Infantry. He enlisted in Mendon, Michigan on 23 December 1863, joined his company on 4 January 1864, and was discharged on 16 September 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
Henry was married on 31 January 1868 in Sturgis, St. Joseph County, Michigan to Sarah Vanetten. Justice of the Peace Bracey Tobey[?] conducted the ceremony, which was witnessed by George Bucknell and Henry Well. Sarah was born on 25 July 1849 in Ohio, daughter of (–?–) Vanetten and Elizabeth Porter.
On 28 July 1870, the couple lived in Nottawa, St. Joseph County, Michigan with their daughter Mirtie and a 15-year-old girl, Ella Vannetting. He worked as a farmer.
In June 1880, Henry and Sarah lived with their daughters Myrta, Lydia, and Delia in Wasippie, St. Joseph County, Michigan. He worked as a day laborer while Sarah was keeping house.
In 1890, Henry lived near Leetsville at Rapid River, Kalkaska County. He reported that he had rheumatism and weak eyes. On 24 July 1890, Henry applied for a Civil War invalid's pension.
On 23 June 1900, the couple and four children- Lewis, Minnie, Vernon, and Earl- lived in Rapid River, Kalkaska County. He worked as a farmer and the three youngest children were attending school.
On 16 April 1910, the couple lived in Garfield township with their sons Louis and Earl, and a daughter, Mrs. Walter Dean, her husband, and that couple's six children. Henry was working as a farmer.
In January 1920, Henry and Sarah lived with their son Lewis at 1005 Hannah Avenue. He worked as a laborer at the saw mill, with son Lewis a sawmill foreman.
Henry died on 28 February 1922 in Traverse City. Sarah applied for a Civil War widow's pension on 9 March 1922.
Sarah died on 19 August 1935 in Traverse City.
Henry and Sarah were buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
