Eddie "Masumi" [Massan] Kobayashi, Longtime Strawberry Farmer from Pajaro Valley and Salinas, CA Dies:
Eddie "Masumi" Kobayashi, one of the regions first farmers to successfully grow strawberries and distribute them nationwide passed away on June 20, 2011. He was 94.
Eddie "Masumi" was born December 3, 1916 in the rural Pajaro Valley where his parents grew and farmed apples. At age 3, he moved with his mother to the city of Iwakuni in the Yamaguchi Prefecture of Japan. Eddie attended school in Japan throughout the sixth grade. At age 14, he returned to the United States to continue farming by his father's side.
Eddie met and married Fumiko [Jean] Yagi-also from Parajo. They were married March 21, 1940 and remained together in the area until the outbreak of World War II. For 3 years, Eddie and his wife were interned separately, but later reunited at the Poston, AZ concentration camp where their daughter Sumiye [Madeline] Huffstutter was born in 1944. A second child [their son], Ronald Thomas Kobayashi, M.D. was born in 1948 in Watsonville, CA.
Eddie continued a successful career in the strawberry farming business until his retirement in the early 80's. A strong, intensely humble man, happily married for 71 years, he lived in a modest ranch style home in Watsonville, CA for over 40 years before moving to Guam, U.S.A. in October 25, 1999 to live with his son and daughter-in-law and their 3 children.
