Charles Arthur Wyler (Carl Artur) was born in Grindelwald, Bern, Switzerland on February 8, 1868 to Susanna Wyler and Carl Gloor (Glore). As a small boy, he herded sheep on the French side of the Alps. During the day, he picked the delicious berries that grew in the mountains. At night, returning his sheep to the town, he would sell the berries. With the few pennies he received, he bought bread. He once remarked, "If I could only get enough bread to eat." Bread was baked in an oven owned by the city. No one baked his own.
