Jack was the second child, first son of James and Margaret Carey, nephew of TJ McNevin and grandson of Patrick McNevin. He attended St. Patrick's grade school in St. Paul ( see letter below) and moved to Lewistown with his family in 1916. He volunteered for the Army in 1917(WWI). He moved to Long Beach in 1924 and was a member of the Early Settlers Club. He earned a LLB degree from Southwestern University, Los Angeles, Ca in 1929. He was a Chief Clerk of the Long Beach Harbor. In March 1939 he, his brother Tony and his nephew Richard flew into the mountains of California on a mining trip. When they flew back it was foggy and they got over the ocean and ran out of gas. After two to three hours he and his brother drown. His body was never found.

"The will of the late John J. Carey, who with his brother, Tony Carey, was drowned when their airplane fell into the Pacific Ocean on March 20,1939, was filed for probate in the Long Beach Superior Court petition filed by Attorney Charles C. Straton lists the estate at less than $10,000. Margaret Carey*, the widow, is named sole beneficiary and executrix." (Long Beach newspaper clipping) *Margaret Carey was John's mother, not his wife.

O'Shea of Holy Innocents parish will officiate . Military honors will be accorded Carey afterward by a firing squad and a bugler from Admiral William A. Moffatt Post No. 767, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Close friends of the deceased in the "Early Settlers Club" will attend the service and will deposit a wreath upon the ocean approximately at the spot where the airplane went down. "St. Patrick's School, St. Paul, MN Dec. 25, 1900
Dear Papa and Mamma,
Again we celebrate the great festival of Christmas. It is the anniversary of our Savior's birthay (sic), a day on which every one rejoices. Everyone tries to make it pleasant as possible, so this is the simplest way I have of expressing my feelings of gratitude to you. I may have caused you many a painful hour during the past year and now dear parents may I beg your forgiveness and will renew my promice (sic) of trying to be a better child next year.
Trusting that you will have a Merry Christmas and that every day of 1901 will be especially blessed for you. It is the wish of your devoted child,Justin Carey"
