Herschel, the youngest son, and tenth child of William A. and Permelia (Braden) Lawson grew up on his parent's farm west of Greensburg, IN. After his marriage to Mabel Dell Harwood on Aug. 24, 1905, the couple lived in Adams Township where Mr. Lawson farmed the rich Decatur Co. soil.

Herschel later farmed near Rockville, IN, moving to Indianapolis by 1940. Herschel and Mabel were the parents of three sons. Herschel's obituary follows:

"Herschel Lawson, 71, a former resident of Decatur county, died suddenly Tuesday night at his home in Indianapolis.

"Born near Milford on Dec. 6, 1880, he was the son of William and Pamelia (sic) Braden Lawson. He had engaged in farming in Decatur county for many years. In recent years he had been a resident of Indianapolis.

"The survivors are: three sons, James, Charles and Horace Lawson, all of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Josie Lawson, of Milford and Mrs. Janie Gallentine, of San Bernardino, Calif.; a niece, Mrs. Harry Baker, of west of Greensburg and two nephews, Claude Johnson, of Hope and Dale Johnson, of west of Greensburg.

"The plans for the funeral rites had not been determined at the time the message was received here."

"Herschel Lawson, 72, former resident of Decatur county, was buried at Rockville Friday, following funeral rites at a mortuary in Indianapolis. He died Tuesday night at his home at 211 Detroit street, Indianapolis.

"When he moved to Indianapolis 15 years ago, Mr. Lawson became a packer at Kingan & Co., retiring recently. Born on a farm near Greensburg, he later had his own farm near Rockville."
