World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant Major in the 18th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, British Army. On July 30, 1916, at Guillemont, France, Sergeant Major Evans volunteered to take an important message to a forward post after five runners had been killed in attempting to do so. He covered about 700 yards, the whole way under heavy enemy fire, succeeded in delivering the message in spite of being wounded. He then made the return journey under severe rifle and machine-gun fire, but managed to rejoin his company position. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal.
