CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Tim "Batman" Thompson, 52, of Cherokee passed away at his home Tuesday, July 19, 2011.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. The Rev. Dave Harkins will officiate. Burial will be in Meriden Cemetery, Meriden, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars L. A. Wescott Post 2253. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Tim was born Dec. 6, 1958, to Arnold and Idabell (Olson) Thompson in Sioux City. He attended school in Cherokee and obtained his general education diploma. He was a member of the U.S. Army, obtaining the rank of E-6.

He was united in marriage to Melissa Helget on Sept. 21, 1984, in Cherokee. He worked at Holzhauer Motors after school until he joined the U.S. Army, K-Products for six years and Tyson Foods for the last 21 years.

He was a member of the Calvary Chapel. He enjoyed fishing, playing with his children and his dog, Kiba, watching movies, and collecting anything Batman.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa; two children, Jesse Colt Thompson and Crystal Ann Thompson of Cherokee; his mother, Idabell Thompson of Cherokee; seven siblings, Elaine (Geoff) Whiteford of Australia, Randy Thompson and Cindy Rex of Primghar, Iowa, Tammy Millikan of Cleghorn, Iowa, Vicki (Chuck) Hill of Meriden, Valerie "Vally" (Brian) Decker of Cherokee, Carl (Vickie) Thompson of Cherokee, and Kenny (Viola) Thompson of McKee, Ky.; also several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold Thompson; infant sister, Lori Faye; paternal grandparents, William and Rosie Thompson; and maternal grandparents, Nels Olson, Lawrence and Johanna Switzer.
