James traveled to/near Toronto Canada, from Ireland with his father and mother. His father died on board ship of cholera, his mother, is unknown at this time. She may BE BURIED IN CANADA as they were going back and forth thru Detroit border frequently.

James married Lavinia/Lavinia nee Brennan (daughter of James Brennan and Mary nee Moran Moore) also of Ireland on July 23,1861 in Toronto, York County Ontario. This marriage is listed/spelled as TOURNEY,JAMES and Lavinia Brennan Marriage Registers 1858-1869 film number 1030065 The church was ; ST.MICHAELS' BASCILLICA in Toronto York, Ontario (ROMAN CATHOLIC) SEE ATTACHED PHOTO


To this marriage they and had two sons born to them in Toronto Canada .Sometime in before 1865 ,the family left Canada, to Buffalo New York where their daughter Mary L. was born. They then lost Mary, whom is linked below.

They appear in the 1865 census for Buffalo New York the name is transcribed wrong it is showing/listed as LERNEY ,


They moved to Detroit MI. First living in the saloon on Michigan Avenue, that he ran. They then moved to the East side, 12 ward on Magnolia St.

This is also where James appears on record as being a CONSTALBLE for the 12th ward in 1880-1888.

Roman Catholic.

In October of 1890 the Detroit Newspaper carried numerous front page articles about James Tierney being fined for having his saloon opened up on a SUNDAY !!!!Back in the time period this was a no No ,in violation of BLUE BOOK LAWS.!!!James was found not guilty, as he stated that he was having all his family over after church to celebrate a Christening/Baptismal party. In court testimony James Tierney states that; "I know my father died on board the ship as we crossed over to Canada. She is buried in Canada ."


*****Second Marriage of James Tierney and Mary ISABELL nee Connor, daughter of William and Mary Connor. Mary was born in Belleville Canada. This couple were married on December 27, 1899 IN Detroit Michigan Wayne County. Where as James Tierney gives his parents names as Michael Tierney and Sarah nee( Brion BRIEN)? again . MARRIED BY REVERAND JAMES G. DOHERTY CATHOLIC PRIEST. MARRIAGE OCCURED AT ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH IN DETROIT, WAYNE COUNTY MICHIGAN.**********gs film numer2342514


They had 6 more children born in Detroit MI. He gave his son Michael the saloon, then ran for office in the DETROIT CITY COUNCIL AND WON!!He is listed in the Journal of the common council by Detroit Michigan city council listed over 100 Times for voting, speeches, and motions. Dated Jan 10, 1888- Jan 8 1889.Served 1887-1890 so far.

James's death certificate states that he has lived in Mi. for 51 years, died in Eloise infirmary of possible T.B.

Lillie was the daughter of Lewis Benwigg and Whinnie Seldofsky.His second wife was then Martha Jones in Detroit MI. In October 1,1913 daughter of J. Jones and Harriette Jones.in later life John and his wife are living in Wyandotte MI.


2.Michael born in Toronto Canada in 1862, he marries Mary/May Farmer .He sadly dies.


3.Mary born 1867 IN BUFFALO NEW YORK while moving .


4.George L. Tierney born in 1870 in Windsor Essex, Ontario, Canada, Marries M. Victoria Seymour on October 16, 1894 in Windsor, Essex, Ontario Canada .M. Victoria Seymour was the daughter of Alex Seymour and Mary Gilland.


5.William Tierney born in Detroit MI 1872 Married MATHILDA MILLSKYE on OCT, 13, 1891.Wayne County. Daughter of John Millskye and mother unknown .William then marries Ann ?? (Anson)1910 census


6.Daniel Tierney born circa 1877 in Detroit Wayne county.


7. James J. Tierney born circa 1884 in Detroit Wayne County

James went west to Colorado because of his tuberculosis and sadly died in 1908. James Tierney was living with his Uncle William Tierney in PUEBLO COLORADO according to the newspaper article that reported his death.
