US Congressman. He was born to Parker Varnum and Dorcas Brown Varnum in Dracut, Massachusetts, was educated locally and graduated from the distinguished Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1798. After graduating from university, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and relocated to Haverhill, Massachusetts, where he commenced to practicing law in 1802. A Federalist, he then served as a Member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1811. He then moved to Lowell, Massachusetts, and ran for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Republican, he then served Massachusetts's 3rd (Twentieth and Twenty-First Congresses) District in the United States House of Representatives from 1825 to 1831. After his term in the United States Congress had expired on March 3, 1831, he returned to Lowell, Massachusetts, and then to Niles, Michigan, where he resumed his law practice until his death. He passed away in Niles, Michigan, at the age of 58.
