In the fall of 1864, Alexander McColley and his wife Polly sold their farm in Marcellon township of Columbia County, Wisconsin and bought another in Delavan township of Faribault County, Minnesota. Four of their sons and a married daughter had previously moved to Minnesota and the sons had enlisted in the Army (Civil War). Alexander helped with the sons' farms and families while they were away in the Army.

After the fall harvest of 1865, Alexander & Polly and their married daughter, Electa McColley Morehouse, went back to Wisconsin to visit family and friends.

According to notes written by their grandson, Rev Charles E McColley (1866-1950), on their return trip to Minnesota, Alexander became ill and died suddenly on October 17th at Tower Hotel near Lisbon, Wisconsin. There was no funeral; only a prayer and he was buried beside the road. Polly and Electa continued alone on the way home. Charley Morehouse (Electa's husband) was to meet them along the way, but Polly and Electa had reached St Charles, Minnesota and had not met Charley. At St Charles, the road westward forked with two routes home. Polly and Electa choose one route and went about a mile when they met Charley.

With the discovery of this cemetery stone for Alexander McColley in Clifton cemetery, the story protrayed by Rev Charles McColley may not have been totally accurate in the fact that he was buried along the road (and assumed in an unmarked grave).

Alexander McColley (1805-1865) is my great great great grandfather.
