US Senator, US Diplomat. Served as a United States Senator from Michigan from 1875 to 1879. Also served as a Member of the Michigan State Senate for the 3rd District from 1850 to 1851, Candidate for Governor of Michigan in 1852, Delegate to the Republican National Convention from Michigan in 1856, Justice of the Michigan State Supreme Court from 1858 to 1875, Chief Justice of the Michigan State Supreme Court from 1872 to 1873, and United States Minister to Peru from 1879 to 1881.
